Archive on diplomatic relations between Portugal and Yugoslavia, by Jorge Pessoa Santos Carvalho

We would like to highlight the donation made by Jorge Pessoa Santos Carvalho, as part of his research in the Belgrade archives, which enabled him to collect thousands of textual and photographic archive documents relating to diplomatic relations between the two countries in the 20th century. In a second entry, two groups of documents were donated in digital format relating to the links between the Patriotic Front for the National Liberation of Portugal, the League of Communists of Yugoslavia and the Socialist Alliance of Yugoslavia; and a second section on relations between the Communist League of Yugoslavia and the PCP, as well as between the ASP/PS and the Socialist Alliance of Yugoslavia.

The documents (digital copies of the aforementioned archives) were located and recovered in the context of the research project carried out by the donor as part of the production of his doctoral thesis. The works/publications resulting from this work are available for consultation via the CD25A online catalogue and the archive is available for consultation in person.

In 2011, Jorge Santos Carvalho interviewed Eduardo Ponces Queiroz do Cruzeiro as part of the CD25A Oral History Project. This document is available for consultation in person for academic purposes, subject to prior authorisation by the CD25A Board.

Attached is an ‘Anti-Communist Postcard’ with the flags of the four fascist states on the front and photographs of Salazar, Franco, Mussolini and Hitler with the fascist emblems on the inside. This letter was used regularly in the years before and during the war until 1943, and the edition is from the Portuguese fascist printing house ‘Alma Nacional’.  On the back of the letter, below the cross, it says: ‘helping wounded nationalists means performing an act of Christian charity’ (for the Portuguese fascist volunteers in the Spanish Civil War).  - Now the fascist Salazar is shouting loud and clear: ‘who is Portugal's greatest democrat’.
