Amadeu Carvalho Homem and his legacy in the founding of the 25 April Documentation Centre

The team at the 25 April Documentation Centre of the University of Coimbra expresses its deep sorrow at the passing of Amadeu Carvalho Homem on 5 April 2026, and gratefully recalls his role in the Centre’s founding, having served on its Board of Directors in 1989.
Born in Sátão in 1945, Amadeu Carvalho Homem graduated in Philosophy from the Faculty of Arts at the University of Coimbra, where he pursued a long and distinguished academic career, joining the History group and establishing himself as a leading figure in the study of the History of Contemporary Culture and Republicanism in Portugal.
He obtained his PhD in Modern and Contemporary History from the University of Coimbra, with a thesis dedicated to Teófilo Braga. His academic career was marked by the rigour and depth with which he studied the origins, propaganda and establishment of the Republic in Portugal. His work was recognised by the Portuguese State, and he was awarded the Grand Cross of the Order of Infante D. Henrique by the then President Jorge Sampaio.
Amadeu Carvalho Homem’s association with the 25 April Documentation Centre at the University of Coimbra made a significant contribution to the establishment and consolidation of this project. He played a part in promoting and disseminating the historical memory associated with the building of democracy in Portugal and, in 1990, coordinated the creation of the Chronology of the most significant political and social events in recent Portuguese history.

This work was subsequently published as the catalogue for the exhibition ‘25 April: Memory and Vision of a Recent Era’, as part of the celebrations marking the 7th centenary of the University of Coimbra.
The team at the University of Coimbra’s 25 April Documentation Centre pays tribute to his memory, highlighting his scientific, civic and institutional legacy, and extends its deepest condolences to his family.
